Beswick Animals Figurines were originally created by J. W. Beswick from his pottery company in England.

They started during 1892 in there pottery located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, by James Wright Beswick along with his two son’s, John and Gilbert,

They’re primarily recognized at the time for creating some of the highest quality porcelain figurines available, which include many of the Beatrix Potter figures, along with a large collection of farm animals, these are today, all highly sought after.

Based from their Gold Street pottery works in Longton, they initially made tableware, together with various ornaments, including Staffordshire dogs and cats. James Wright Beswick passed away in 1921, nevertheless the company continued to expand under the guidance his grandson, John Ewart Beswick.

During 1934, high fired bone china was produced from their pottery works, resulting in high-quality collectible figurines, for instance, famous race horses and champion dogs from  that time period.

In 1936 they became a limited company, John Beswick Ltd.

During 1939, Arthur Gredington is hired as the chief modeller, he helped create 190 Rearing Horsemen, these are amongst the largest (and most desired among collectors) ever created by this company.

Then underneath decorating manager Jim Hayward, they turned more towards producing realistic animal pieces, together with farm animals, cats, dogs, fish and wild animals. In 1945 their ongoing growth made possible the actual purchase of the adjoining factory, this allowed for more offices, a larger warehousing facilities.

During 1947, Lucy Beswick suggested bringing to life the actual drawings inside the Beatrix Potter publications. then in 1948, John Beswick attained the legal rights to recreate a selection of 10 Beatrix Potter characters in earthenware figures, the very first which was Jemima Puddle-Duck, modelled by Arthur Gredington. Then Beswick in 1952 commenced producing a selection of Disney cartoon figures, which includes Mickey Mouse, Snow White, as well as Bambi.

Combined with the designs of James Hayward, the high-quality pieces that they created then, are now highly sought-after.

1969 was the year when the Beswick company was purchased by Royal Doulton, even though the Animal Figurines stayed in production, by 1989 the Beswick backstamp was discontinued in preference of the parent company’s Royal Doulton and Royal Albert DA backstamp.

Beatrix Potter figures which have great popularity amongst collectors, and also within the general public, seemed to be the deciding factor in re-introducing the product range during 1998, tailored for the collectors marketplace. By the conclusion of 2002, Royal Doulton discontinued production of Beswick items and in 2003 the Gold Street works had been sold off to property developers.

During 2005, a Yorkshire company, John Sinclair (Sheffield) Ltd., purchased the actual Beswick trade name from Royal Doulton, which includes manufacturing moulds along with all associated archive material. The company currently produces a quantity of various animal figurines,  mostly cats and dogs, an thus reviving the name of John Beswick, as a brand to collect for a new generation of collectors.
